How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Published on

Windows are important to your home’s beauty and comfort; they give you a wonderful view of your outdoor space, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your home. Because they are so vital to a home, they receive a lot of action. It’s a good idea to keep your windows clean so that they keep functioning as they should.

Window glass can get dirty pretty easily, particularly with little hands or pets in the home, but lucky for you glass cleaning isn’t that hard. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have features that it make it less painful to clean the exterior of your windows from indoors, too. Looking for an easy, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors swears on:

  1. You can start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that collects on the sill and ledges will stay there for a long time otherwise, and cleaning it out will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Make sure not to use the same cleaning cloth that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment on the side of your window screen that faces inside. You can also use this vacuum piece to pick up any leftover dirt and dust on your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to get your glass clean. You can blend your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Then you can add the cleaner to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from several different directions for the best clean.
  4. After the cleaning, let your windows air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if you see streaks.

We’ve got a few more tips, too! We suggest that you clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too fast and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals favor microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your gorgeous view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean throughout the year.
